AMD 4 Jason Bui

Overall, the movie was a good benchmark to see how I am progressing in learning German. I was able to pick up practically every line that was spoken in German, which shows that I am doing quite well. Also, it is very fun to be able to apply the German learned in real life.

AMD 4- Callie Chappell

Now that I understand the words, I think that it is especially interesting how the cadence of the piece carefully follows the lyrics. This stanza is from the second movement, a dirge-like piece with lines, spoken in German, that follow a downward feel.

I found the article on German Beuracracy to be somewhat opposed to the United States. Germany is very interested in certificates, the US, on the other hand, praises those who avoid mainstream certification. Examples being college drop outs, Steve Jobs and Bill Gates. I wonder if they would have succeeded in Germany.

The article on Neighborliness mentions preferred neighbor behavior that is also appreciated in the US.If one does not shovel his/her pathway here, and a neighbor slips, the home owner is liable. Noise complaint is also something that can be reported. Also, for planned communities, one must keep their property looking tidy. Thus expected neighbor behavior is similar in both societies, German behavior just may be a bit more set in stone.

Germany's patriotism is interesting, it is entirely unlike the US. If one says that s/he hates the United States, and they are a citizen of the United states, that person is typically shunned. Whereas, in Germany, such practice is accepted.

The article on career training and school rigidity in Germany didn't have any new ideas, and was suff we've mostly covered.

Vienna sounds like an interesting place I am definitely thankful for their ApfelStudel's.

It is weird how much the history of Österreich was shaped by WWII and Hitler. I wonder if nations like Österreich still guilt, or feel aggression towards, Germany .

For this Kulter 9, I read the article on Germany's Patriotism Problem: Just Don't Fly the Flag.  I found it interesting because it reminded me of the Soccer Championship that Germany won a few years ago.  When I visited Germany for the soccer tournament, it was amazing seeing how excited Germany was for their team.  Once they won, everyone in Munich was waving flags all over the city.  Only after the celebration did some Germans become concerned about their excitement.  Other nations in Europe were worried when Germany gained excitement after the tournament because they had not seen that amount of patriotism since World War II.  It is unbelievable to think about a historical event that happened seventy years ago effecting the actions of German society to this day.  Maybe one day we will see German flags wave outside German residences.

Harry geht ins Reptilienhaus. Er kann zu Schlangen sprechen.

Reading the articles, "Bureaucracy Gone Awry: The German Certificate Fetish," "Love Thy Neighbor: German Law Tells You How," "Germany's Patriotism Problem: Just Do not Fly the Flag," and various excerpts from the 365 Things  book, were Actually quite interesting and fairly informative.

The first article, "Bureaucracy Gone Awry: The German Certificate Fetish," is about how Germans keep binders of certificates, documenting almost everything in Their Lives. Although it is quite peculiar, the concept of keeping records, documenting everything you do, can be quite useful. Speaking as a student applying to different schools and programs, the concept of owning a binder with all of your life accomplishments would not only save you a lot of time, but it would so help make a compelling application. In my opinion, everybody shouldhave a "Leitz - the German two-ring equivalent of the three-ring binder -. Holding documentary evidence of Virtually every bill ever paid, every official step taken" With a binder like this, the Entire world would be much more organized and the amount of time saved going through old documentations and certificates would be greatly minimized.

The article, "Love Thy Neighbor: German Law Tells You How," is about how Germans are very wary When it comes to Their neighbors. In Germany, theyhave something called "sleep time" or quiet time. This time is from 8 pm to 7 am, and all day Sunday and holidays. Usually, "a little quiet snoring is allowed, but house and garden appliances and machinery are off limits. No. midnight clothes washing or Sunday afternoon lawn mowing." Washing your car is gene rally not allowed. So, parties and barbecues are limited to only several times a year. In Germany, you are therefore responsible for your street and your sidewalk. Overall, I think I did Germans are too uptight When it comes to Their neighbors. I am not saying you Should not respect your neighbors, but a specified quiettime Seems to be a bit extreme.

The last article, "Germany's Patriotism Problem: Just Do not Fly the Flag," discusses how Germans do not fly Their flag much. After the world wars, Germans are very hesitant to express Their love and pride For their country. Germany's patriotism what almost non-existent. Personally, I find this to be very bizarre. Germans are the type of people did you would think had a lot of pride, but unfortunately did not Necessarily is the case when it comes to Their homeland. To be honest, Germany Has forgone a lot of change recently and deserves more credit than the German people are giving it.

The 365 things  book had many interesting excerpts, but most of them consisted of familiar cuisines and activities. Some interesting excerpts were the "Trabi Safari" and "Kuhlbutz tomb Kampehl."

Guten Tag,

Heinrich was called "King of the Germans" or "Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire."

Bald war er "kidnapped by the archbishop of Kooln, who supported the Pope over the antipope that Heinichs Mutter supported."

Taylor

Bureaucracy Gone Awry
Reading this article, I felt overwhelmed. I cannot imagine needing to have documentation for everything to apply for a job. I already get frustrated trying to update my resumé. It seems quite excessive to have a proof of residency/address to get a library card. Don't get me wrong, I'm all about organization, but this is too much. I'd really hate to be on the other end of the application process. Having to go through all of that documentation would probably kill me. I'm kidding, but I would have gray hairs coming in like nobody's business.
Welcome To America. Take a Number.
I'm not going to blatantly scream out my political opinions, but I completely agree with this article. I think people in America forget to take that step back to look at the big picture. Are we really thriving here? Not particularly. Everything is so complicated that nothing ever gets done. Maybe some European influence would help us out.
Love Thy Neighbor
I'm all for respecting other people, but I'm going to grill in my backyard whenever I please. That's a little much. Obviously barking dogs and screaming children can be unpleasant, but it's all part of living near other people with individual prerogatives. I really appreciate that there is a set quiet time, yet I also tend to do laundry late at night. I'm really not sure if I would survive over in Deutschland. :(
Germany's Patriotism Problem
I think it's really sad that Germans are still so ashamed. I surely cannot imagine being part of a country having to come back from such a negative standing in the world, but I don't think they're making it any better by still being ashamed. Maybe if they were prouder of what their country has become today, they could become more patriotic. I don't know. This article made me feel really bad for Germany.

Guten Tag,

"I love Germany!" Ich verstehe, dass Hitler sehr schlecht war, aber "the show must go on."

Um 5:00am "He would turn the car on and wait 15 minutes or more to warm it up." Ich wache böse auf. Aber, Deutschland hat zu viel Regeln...

Germans seem to be pretty obsessive about things, especially organizing their lives...

AMD 4 by Josh Crane

In AMD 4, I observed at German and American stereotypes. Language was one that I came across. Die Deustch Sprache is sometimes thought to be a harsh spattering of long words, where even the most tame thoughts sound like barking commands. Er haben nicht the reputation of a romance language. However, I am finding that in reality the language does have a flow to it. Each word does not sound like a harsh movie quote. It also has a great amount of practicality, in that more business discussions and transactions take place in German than Spanish, or French. Another I was confronted with was how much the Germans lieben ihre Autos. While that is a large stereotype, it was stated that many Germans use bikes much more than cars, especially in large cities. They are more practical, and do not require fuel, which is more expensive than here in the States. The last German stereotype I viewed was that Germans come across as efficient robots that never stray from the perfect system. It was brought to my attention that they, like America, have construction projects that run behind schedule, or funding that falls through.

I then went to view how Germany views America. I was reminded first that we rely a ton on fast food. McDonalds and Burger King is about where fast food ends in Germany. But they are constantly amazed at how much we consume. I would have to say we do consume a lot, but it is emphasized by many Americans not working out, and being lazy. This goes hand in hand with the obesity of Americans. Not so much a stereotype, but a fact that Germans find crazy, is that we can drive at 16, but drink until 21. Germans are very much the opposite, and so find this absurd. Another was that Germans feel America is very dangerous. I would attribute this to how much violence is on our media outlets. It’s what people are most interested in, so it’s what everyone hears. Very large sizes offered here also make them feel rather out of place. Food portions, cars, and houses, and fridges. I will concede that Americans like things bigger, sometimes unnecessarily. Sometimes I wonder about that. The last is that Germans see that Americans are self-centered because we show news of mainly America, and not so much other countries. I would say that this claim holds no water. With the recent fad of “’Merica” quotes and phrases, it could seem that way, but really America is just getting excited to be America.

The first article mentions Germany’s love of hardcopy certificates - it turns out Germans demand documentation for anything. Job apps require classes taken, and experience. Colleges want many papers from high school and elementary. The demand for evidence does mean that nothing official slips through the cracks. Without the right elements, one can’t rent movies or books.

The next article is by a visitor to America. He says America demands more patience than Germany, or Europe – “…Europe’s bureaucratic nightmares have nothing on America’s.” He had problems with the website that needed his info, and he says a day was spent getting his visas completed. Going to school for his kids meant certifying vaccinations in both countries. He says he has better infrastructure.

Article 3 was about dealing with neighbors. It turns out that being a good neighbor is an art in Germany. One may not have a harmful effect on those around him, says the law. There is even a German court to deal with these issues. A few rules: no loud noises, like mowing lawns on Sundays/holidays, use dish soap to wash your car so no chemicals enter the area, and grilling is limited.

Flags are much less prominent in Germany than here in the USA. There are no flags in company headquarters, and none in personal homes. This is a sign of a larger lack of patriotism. Indeed, in 2004 Germany picked a new president, and he hushed most everyone when saying, “I love Germany.” The writer mentions WWII and being too close in history.

Carolyn Kodis: Kultur 9

When I first started reading "Love Thy Neighbor: German Law Tells You How" I asked myself, Wow, aren't these people a little excessive?  And then I realized, I would be the perfect German neighbor.  First of all, I am a cat person, so no barking.  Second, I can't grill to save my life, so no barbecue.  Third, I value sleep over everything, so no parties.  I'm a German's dream.
Oh, but how I wish I could have the German neighbor court system to back me up when it comes to roommate issues.  She's a German's nightmare neighbor (comes in late all the time, likes to party, etc).
On a side note, wouldn't "German Neighbor Court" make a great TV show (think Judge Judy, but more ridiculous).

Kapitel 9 Kultur 4 Emily Maggioncalda

I watched videos of celebrities speaking deutsch. Mila Kunis, die in That 70’s Show und Family Guy spielt, spricht gut Deutsch. The reason I say Sandra Bullock speaks wonderfully is because I could barely understand what she was saying. I could make out what the other two women were saying because they were saying fairly simple things. Sandra however, was at an awards show and had much to say besides thank you. After watching the video so many times I eventually turned on the subtitles. This was interesting for me because it was cool to see some celebrities that I like speaking one of my favorite languages.

As for the organization regarding job applications and such, I think that its great that Germans are so organized.

The tv show was called drive it on www.dw.de. They went over the Porche Macan. It is a small compact SUV and has a lot of cool features. IT has a button in the Auto for the type of driving you are doing. For example if you are driving off road you hit a button and the suspension lifts the car about 2". Or if you are going down a very steep slow, you can hit another button that will control the the car for you. That is as far as I got because the site stopped working and I couldn't get the rest of the video to load.

Kultur 9, Michael Nizinski

I like the  way the Germans have documentation for everything and have certificates for skills they possess. The place I worked in the past have continuously hired people that said they were able to do a certain or specific job but later found out they were lying on their application. I personally like the rules Germans have for neighbors.  The only one I would change is the BBQ's. The rest I quite like and wish we had the same ones here in the US. The patriotism article I also understood because when someone shows a lot of patriotism for their own country it shows in a way that their country is better than everyone else's. And Germans aren't emotional so they probably don't care to much less they are winning in something.

Kapitel 9 Kultur - Alex Gamso

The Germans are quite a fickle bunch with rather odd quirks. Enjoying paper work? Hating national pride? Fear upsetting your neighbor? What's the deal with all that?

Documenting everything since starting school would be a huge undertaking here in the US, but in Germany, it is a necessity. Applying for any job at any level requires all your qualifying certificates, address card, and more. Simply renting a movie also requires such documentation. It all seems a bit ridiculous to me, but alas they seem to be doing a lot better than we are here. Certainly by maintain a good file of what and how well you've done things in school can make your one of three paths through school and land an apprenticeship or entrance into a technical school.

Now that the Olympics are over it is almost impossible to believe that any country fears having national pride, Germans, on the other hand, take full advantage of toting the flag in sport competitions but not in day to day life. Their logic makes sense, being a rather newly restructured country with a troubled past, being too full of themselves could cause them to revert to their darker days. Taking a trip to DC, one would likely lose count of the number of American flags they would see on all the monuments celebrating victories, our freedoms, and our past leaders. A trip to Berlin would be nearly the opposite. Hardly any flags and monuments remembering how horrible the past has been.

It sounds as though all the neighbors in Germany are angry senior citizens that hate any amount of noise or laziness and are not afraid to make their neighbors lives a living hell. Quiet hours and a limited number of social gatherings and cookouts seems almost like living in the dorms here. Clearing sidewalks is an all too common task here in small cities as well. Where water is a short commodity, washing your car and even watering your lawn are limited, if not outright restricted, too.

Wissen Sie, was alle sagen? Warum er verschwunden ist? Was ihn endlich aufgehalten hat?” The owls have nothing about the Rumors they are spreading. Do you know what they all say? Why has he disappeared? What if he finally returns? Die letze Quote ist “jedes Kind in unserer Welt wird seinen Namen kennen!” every kid in the world will know his name (at least the wizarding world).

"Love Thy Neighbor: German Law Tells You How": Das war sehr lustig. Wenn der Artikel sagt, "A complaint about croaking frogs in the neighbor’s pond ended with a victory for the frogs." habe ich das war toll gedacht.

In the article "Bureaucracy Gone Awry" ich denke dass certificates für alles ist sehr wasteful and a pain in the ass. In the "Love Thy Neighbor" article du kannst nicht dein Auto waschen. That ist schwer in Amerika wann viele Leute hat Autos und washing them at a Auto Wash ist teuer. To get along with your Neighbors du musst ein gut Person sein. Just because of a mistake made by ein Person doesn't mean Deutschland should be punished for it, especially 60 Jahre später. The Flower House ist interessant.
