Kapitel 9 Kultur, Yuntao Chen

Among the articles that I read for this chapter's Kultur, the following ones particularly caught my attention.

"Bureaucracy Gone Awry: The German Certificate Fetish": this article describes Germany as a super Bureaucratic country where even a simple job application requires piles of paperwork. It is very interesting because it reminds me my home country China, where such conducts are also very common. I can understand that as a very cautious and precise people, the Germans probably want everything to be well documented and double-checked. It supposedly ensures that every step in a process is accurate and well-organized. However, if a very bureaucratic process only produces inefficient and cumbersome results, then it becomes a burden of the society.

The other article I read was titled "Germany's Patriotism Problem: Just Don't Fly the Flay". It describes how it is almost a taboo to display the national flag in Germany. It also discusses the issue with people not showing patriotism explicitly in Germany. I have personally interacted with several German friends, and I have also found out this issue. In contrast to American students or my fellow Chinese students, the Germans tend to be more critical about their country. My German friend told me that he very seldom sings their national anthem, which surprised me. I think there is no fault in loving one's country. As long as one is not blindly "patriotic" as to go against humanity and morality, then everyone should be proud to show their affection towards their motherland (or Vaterland).

The article about how to be on good terms with your neighbours ("Love Thy Neighbor: German Law Tells You How") is hilarious. Most of the things that are mentioned in the article are also common practices in America, what sets it apart is that some of the rules are actually put into law in Germany. And more interestingly, when you are not sure what to do, they have dedicated office in the city hall (Ordnungsamt representative) that you can consult with.

Kultur 3 Kapitel 9

In the article "Bureaucracy Gone Awry" ich denke dass certificates für alles ist sehr wasteful and a pain in the ass. But ich verstehe warum sie nicht electronic copies machen. Electronic Papiers können Photoshopped. Ich denke dass ein Papier für jeder minute detail ist wasteful haben. In the "Love Thy Neighbor" article du kannst nicht dein Auto waschen. That ist schwer in Amerika wann viele Leute hat Autos und washing them at a Auto Wash ist teuer. To get along with your Neighbors du musst ein gut Person sein. Das ist nicht schwer. Ich versehe nicht warum Deutschland hat kein National Pride. Just because of a mistake made by ein Person doesn't mean Deutschland should be punished for it, especially 60 Jahre später. Ich will um Milkabilly essen. Ich liebe Eis. Ich würde die Museen gehen. Musik und die neue Nationalgalerie sind toll. Der Kinderbauernhof sieht sehr spaß. Ich bin kein Kinder und ich will gehen. The Flower House ist interessant. Ich denke wie Western das Dorf ist zu ein original Westerndorf. Shisha ist interessant. Die Farbe in das Bild sind schön. Scharmützelbob ist sehr interessant und spaß schauen.

Kultur 3, Emily Maggioncalda

Ich kann nicht in Deutschland wohnen. Ich liebe es zieht. Ich fahre immer mit meinem Fenster unten. Ich verstehe nicht diese Geheimniskrankheiten (mystery diseases). Ich mag nicht Medizin nehmen, aber ich werde, ob ich krank sein. Ich werde nicht in ein Saunahaus gehen, weil ich nackt sein mag nicht. Ich mag Wärme sein, aber ich werde nach Hause bleiben.

In Berlin will ich zum Nivea-Haus gehen. Ich liebe Massage und Maniküre erhalten. Auch, das Grillparty mitten auf dem Wasser klingt mir gut. Ich finde es sehr interessant. Ich will zum Sea Life gehen, weil ich Fisch sehen liebe.

Ich bin unsicher über die Deutsche Schulsystem. Ich mag die Idee, aber ich bin unsicher über Regierungschulen.

Welcome to our class blog!

We will be using this blog throughout the semester for two kinds of assignments:

1. Once per chapter, the homework plan will direct you to post a response to the culture readings for the chapter on the blog.

2. Roughly every other week, the homework plan will direct you to post here for your Abenteuer mit Deutsch (AMD) assignment. First you do a fun activity that involves German, then you post about it. You should spend an hour total on this (maybe 45-55 minutes doing something, 5-15 minutes posting about it). See Was ist ein AMD, AMD Ideen and Beispiele for ideas. This should get you excited about the kinds of things you can do!
