I enjoyed the German Christmas classic "Dinner for one", a short black and white film performed by two British comedians.

Like any non-German people, it was pretty odd first when I watched the movie. It was an interesting story, and the two performers did very well. However it was difficult to understand the fever that Germans have over this film, to a point it is said to be broadcasted during every Christmas.

But just as the Spiegel article said, the show gets better and better as you keep watching it over and over again. When I watched it for the third time, I also unconsciously started to repeat the punchline "the same procedure as every year, James".

This show is definitely an acquired taste for anyone who did not grow up in Germany, but after watching it several times, especially with some German beer, you may start to grasp its secret charm.

"Dinner for Who?" ist ein interessant kurz Film von dem Gegenstand. Wenn habe ich Zeit, muss ich es sehen. Haha Hartmut liebt "Dinner for Who?". Der Gegenstand "Sorry, We're Closed" war über Lebensmittelladen an Sonntag nicht öffnen. Dass ist nicht möglich hier in Amerika. "Booze Brothers" war ein sehr interessant Gegenstand. Ich weiß wie Männertag würde in Amerika sein. Ich kann nicht meinen Vater Bar krabbeln sehen. Ich werde Skifahren im Sommer. Ich bin nicht gut Skifahren. Das Schloss Sanssouci sieht sehr schön. Ostbloc sieht sehr spaß! Ich liebe Schminke. Ich muss Lippenstiftmuseum gehen. Ich habe immer Base Flying wollen gehen. Im U-Boot durch den Helenesee ist sehr toll! Schwarzen Café ist ein 24 Stunden essen. Das ist das Beste! Classic Open Air wird ein gutes Zeit. Survivaltraining ist sehr wichtig. Ich werde mit den Pinguinen schwimmen. Festival of Lights wird sehr schön sein. Ich weiß nicht wie wichtig Kinder- und Hausmärchen waren. Ich wünsche Amerika hatte Karneval wie Deutschland. Ich will die Schweiz besuchen. Deutschland hat so viele Fest- und Feiertage wie Amerika.

Ich will "Dinner for one" sehen. Es klingt sehr lustig, und ich mag die Englischer Humor. Ich habe alle die "Monty-Python" Episodes gesehen. Ich verstehe nicht warum Deutschgeschäft nie offen sein. Es ist sehr unpraktisch, aber wir sind verzogenes. Ich bin glücklich, dass Männertag in USA nie so betrunken ist. Niemand mag nicht betrunken Männer.

In 365 Dinge mag ich das Lippenstiftmuseum. Ich trage keine Lippenstift, aber ich mag die viele Farben. Auch gehe ich zu Galopprennbahn in Hoppegarten. Ich liebe Pferden. Ich mag Ono Spa. Es ist schön, und sehr ruhig. Viele Dinge in diese Buch sind sehr einmalig und ich weiß nicht, ob mann alle tun kann.

Ich liebe Die Brüder Grimm Märchen. Die Märchen sind sehr klassisch, aber auch sind sie sehr altmodisch. Ich verstehe nicht, wie Karneval fängt in November an. Ostern fängt viel später an. Ich mag Schweiz, weil ich Schokolade und Käse genieße.

Reading the articles, "Bureaucracy Gone Awry: The German Certificate Fetish," "Love Thy Neighbor: German Law Tells You How," "Germany's Patriotism Problem: Just Do not Fly the Flag," and various excerpts from the 365 Things  book, were Actually quite interesting and fairly informative.

The first article, "Bureaucracy Gone Awry: The German Certificate Fetish," is about how Germans keep binders of certificates, documenting almost everything in Their Lives. Although it is quite peculiar, the concept of keeping records, documenting everything you do, can be quite useful. Speaking as a student applying to different schools and programs, the concept of owning a binder with all of your life accomplishments would not only save you a lot of time, but it would so help make a compelling application. In my opinion, everybody shouldhave a "Leitz - the German two-ring equivalent of the three-ring binder -. Holding documentary evidence of Virtually every bill ever paid, every official step taken" With a binder like this, the Entire world would be much more organized and the amount of time saved going through old documentations and certificates would be greatly minimized.

The article, "Love Thy Neighbor: German Law Tells You How," is about how Germans are very wary When it comes to Their neighbors. In Germany, theyhave something called "sleep time" or quiet time. This time is from 8 pm to 7 am, and all day Sunday and holidays. Usually, "a little quiet snoring is allowed, but house and garden appliances and machinery are off limits. No. midnight clothes washing or Sunday afternoon lawn mowing." Washing your car is gene rally not allowed. So, parties and barbecues are limited to only several times a year. In Germany, you are therefore responsible for your street and your sidewalk. Overall, I think I did Germans are too uptight When it comes to Their neighbors. I am not saying you Should not respect your neighbors, but a specified quiettime Seems to be a bit extreme.

The last article, "Germany's Patriotism Problem: Just Do not Fly the Flag," discusses how Germans do not fly Their flag much. After the world wars, Germans are very hesitant to express Their love and pride For their country. Germany's patriotism what almost non-existent. Personally, I find this to be very bizarre. Germans are the type of people did you would think had a lot of pride, but unfortunately did not Necessarily is the case when it comes to Their homeland. To be honest, Germany Has forgone a lot of change recently and deserves more credit than the German people are giving it.

The 365 things  book had many interesting excerpts, but most of them consisted of familiar cuisines and activities. Some interesting excerpts were the "Trabi Safari" and "Kuhlbutz tomb Kampehl."

Guten Tag,

"I love Germany!" Ich denke, dass "Germany's Patriotism Problem" ein bisschen lustig war. Ich mag Amerika. Es ist sehr traurig, dass Deutschland immer Angst von sein Geschischte. Ich verstehe, dass Hitler sehr schlecht war, aber "the show must go on." Wunderbar Länder haben einige nationalismus.

"Love Thy Neighbor" war sehr seltsam. Mein Nachbar war sehr laut! Er hat ein schlecht "Muffler" an seine Auto. Um 5:00am "He would turn the car on and wait 15 minutes or more to warm it up." Ich wache böse auf. Aber, Deutschland hat zu viel Regeln...

Germans seem to be pretty obsessive about things, especially organizing their lives...

Kapitel 9 Kultur 4 Emily Maggioncalda

Ich verstehe nicht, warum Patriotismus schlecht ist. Hitler war böse, aber er ist tot, und Deutschland ist nicht böse. Patriotismus ist gut in kleine Mengen. Ich bin glücklich, dass ich ärgerlich Nachbars nicht habe. Ich mag nicht die Nachbargesetzes. Ich finde sie dumm.

In 365 Dinge mag ich Zahl 167, 173 und 189. 167 ist "Milkabilly". Ich liebe Eis. Ich habe Eis für Abendessen letze Abend gehabt. 173 ist "Das kleinste Theatre Berlins". Ich würde es mag sehen. 189 ist "Salon Sucré", ein Französischgeschäft. Die Französisch machen sehr gut Nachspeise, so ich würde an Salon Sucré essen.

Ich mag nicht die Schulsystem in deutschsprachigen Ländern. Es ist sehr schwierig ein Beruf entscheiden, wann mann junge ist. Wien und Österreich sind sehr interessant, aber ich mag Deutschland besser.

We will be using this blog throughout the semester for two kinds of assignments:

1. Once per chapter, the homework plan will direct you to post a response to the culture readings for the chapter on the blog.

2. Roughly every other week, the homework plan will direct you to post here for your Abenteuer mit Deutsch (AMD) assignment. First you do a fun activity that involves German, then you post about it. You should spend an hour total on this (maybe 45-55 minutes doing something, 5-15 minutes posting about it). See Was ist ein AMD, AMD Ideen and Beispiele for ideas. This should get you excited about the kinds of things you can do!
