AMD 4- Callie Chappell

Ich habe Ein Deutsches Requiem  von Brahms gehört. Wann ich war fünfzehn Jahre alt, habe ich nach Deutschland gereist mit einem internationalen Chor. Wir haben Ein Deutsches Requiem gesungen, aber ich verstehe nicht die Wörter. Jetzt, verstehe ich mehr Wörter. Die Muzik ist schön aber es ist dunkel. Wir haben "Denn alles Fleisch es ist wie Gras/ und alle Herrlichkeit des Menschen / wie des Grases Blumen./ Das Gras ist verdorret / und die Blume abgefallen."gesungen. Now that I understand the words, I think that it is especially interesting how the cadence of the piece carefully follows the lyrics. This stanza is from the second movement, a dirge-like piece with lines, spoken in German, that follow a downward feel. Brahms hat Ein Deutsches Reqiuem für seiner Mutter gescrieben wann sie wäre getotet. In Deutschland, allen Leuten haben das Leid gewusst, und allen Leuten haben gesungen. Sehr schön.

Kultur 9-- Callie Chappell

"Bureaucracy Gone Awry: The German Certificate Fetish": Ich denke das deutsch System ist sehr gut. Ich liebe Ordentlichkeit und der "mythic" Leitz Ordner. Ich habe viele Ordners für meine Unterricht und ich habe viele Papier für die deutsch Klasse. In Amerika, mussen wir ein "social security" Karte und ein Erlaubnis.
"Love Thy Neighbor: German Law Tells You How": Das war sehr lustig. Ich denke die Grundregeln für Nachbarin sind sehr richtig und wichtig. Hier in Amerika, sollen wir mehr aufmerksam. Wenn der Artikel sagt, "A complaint about croaking frogs in the neighbor’s pond ended with a victory for the frogs." habe ich das war toll gedacht.
"Germany's Patriotism Problem: Just Don't Fly the Flag": Das war besonders interessant. Ich habe ein Aufsatz über amerikanisch und deutsch Patriotism geschrieben und ich ein Preis gewonnt. Wenn ich ware in Deutschland, war mein Host-Vater ein Nazi.

AMD 3: Callie Chappell

Für meine Post, habe ich über die Olympische Spiele gelesen. Aus das Franffurter Allgemeine, ich habe viele Dinge gelesen. Zum Beispiel, die deutschen Staffel-Läuferinnen haben eine Olympia-Bronze Medaille gewonnen.

Der Artikel "Bronze als Lohn für ein echtes Team" hat gesagt, "Gold oder Silber verpasst? Nein, ganz klar Bronze gewonnen." Katrin Zeller hat gesagt, "Bronze heute ist die Arbeit eines ganzen Teams." Das ist sehr traurig denn es wäre gern Deutschland gewonnen hat.
Der Liveblog "Sitzen oder Liegen?" hat (like) unsere Prufrung geklungen. Diesen Verben....
Heute, Deutschland hat sieben Gold-Medaille, drei Silber-Medaille, und zwei Bronze-Medaille. (von google)
Ich habe diese Video gesehen und es war sehr lustig. Er sagt, "[Er ist] in official olympia Outfit wissen viele nicht von Vladimir Putin höchstpersönlich entworfen wirklich." (Ich hoffe das ist richtig!)

Kultur 8- Callie Chappell

Die Kultur texts diese Woche war sehr interessant. Normalweise, sind sie nicht so verbunden (related) zu die Vokabeln. Ich denke Draftophobia war richtig. Deutscher nie die Fensters geschlossen. I have been in a hot car with all of the windows up, in situations where opening a window would have been perfectly fine! Über Germany's Sauna Obsession, bin ich nicht überrascht. Nach Hause, habe ich ein grosses Sauna und sie sind sehr cool! (Oder heiss....) From my American perspective, I think the fact that they are unisex is a bit odd, but then again, this is Germany.. home of nude beaches and sex stores galore.... 

Finally, Mysterious Illness in Germany. I thought this article was the most interesting. Meine Familie glauben in "alternative medicine" so ich bin nicht so überrascht. Sometimes, I think people think too little of their immune systems. Even though Germans complain about having seemingly improbable illnesses, perhaps that compels them to take better care of themselves, it may allow their immune systems time to return (naturally) to homeostasis, before larger symptoms develop. 

AMD 2: Callie Chappell

Für meine Post habe ich zwei Gedichte gelesen. Ich will Hölderlin lesen weil ich Martin Heidegger liebe. Letzte Jahr habe ich einen Aufsatz von Heidegger und Gedichte geschrieben. Heidegger liebt  Hölderlin und Hölderlin inspired a lot of Heidegger's ideas about the Dasein (Jetzt verstehe ich!) and poetry as a function of human experience. Jetzt spreche ich Deutsch so ich will Hölderlin auf Deutsch lesen. Die Gedichte sind sehr schön. In "Da ich ein Knabe war ..." ich verstehe "Spielten mit mir.", "Der Pflanzen erfreust", "So hast u mein Herz erfreut", "Vater Helios!", "War ich dein Liebling", " auch ihr/ Nanntet mich nie, / Wie die Menschen sich nennen/ Als kennten sie sich." The most profound phrase in the poem, in my opinion, is "Ich verstand die Stille des Aethers/ Der Menschen Worte verstand ich nie." which translates to "I understood the silence of Aether/ But human words I´ve never understood." The poem as a whole, in my opinion, reflects the aspect of human identity that almost paradoxically makes every person individual in their ubiquitous uniqueness. This line indicates that, because you can understand yourself, you cannot understand the human experience of others. What I love about Hölderlin is how almost benign and idyllic his lines are, yet you can feel, just under the surface, the power and richness of the larger ideas the poem represents. 
Ich lese "Hälfte des Lebens" auch. Ich liebe "Hälfte des Lebens" und ich denke es ist more ambiguous. Written in a set of loosely related phrase and experiences, this poem does not have the thematic cohesiveness as in "Da ich ein Knabe war ..." but in many ways that makes the poem more profound. Die Gedicht war einfach lesen denn es hat viele coordinating conjunctions. Zum beispiel, "Das Land in den See,/ Ihr holden Schwäne,/ Und trunken von Küssen/ Tunkt ihr das Haupt." I noticed the use of a 2-way preposition (throwback to Kapitel 7!) in "Das Land in den See". I was a little surprised because you'd assume that the land and the sea are stationary, but I guess the movement of water makes it accusative.

USA Kulinarisch: 

• Ich denke dass das ist sehr interressant! Since Thanksgiving is a markedly American holiday, I thought that the integration of Thanksgiving in Germany is very interesting. Our holidays have already been quite the diaspora--Halloween, for instance. Although Thanksgiving originated in with the European colonization of North America, the modern associations with the holiday are giving and food, both things that jive well with German culture!

• Additionally, I also love to cook, so when I saw this post, (see below) concerning parchment paper, I could relate. Perhaps, over winter break when I could not find parchment paper anywhere, the grocery stores in my town were merely trying to emulate Germany.

What Discipline? Of German Lines and Pythons: 

I was very surprised by this article. As it says, "the famed German Ordnung -- that is "order" -- breaks down when it comes to waiting in line." Perhaps, as alluded to in the article, the lack of a line-standing tradition resulted in the "no-holds-barred" situation of today. I'd rather think that the German people are instead too free-thinking to be coerced into standing in line. 

365 Dinge: 

• Das Badeschiff: (13) Is this a Bath-Ship!? Mit saunas, ein Pool, und ein Lounge mit Bar, this place sounds so awesome, is has to be German. 
• 3-Muskel Tour: (22) This bike for 4 is so cool! What a great way to explore the surrounding countryside. Lets just hope a train doesn't come while you're on the tracks.... 
• Echtes Berlin-Musical: (27) This would be fun to see because I'm not quite acclimated to hearing German sung. 
• Im ältesten Restaurant Berlins essen: (36) What a great combination of 2 of my favorite things-- food and history! 

Brennpunkt Kultur: 

Einkaufen: While in Germany, I definitely noticed an emphasis on higher-quality goods. For example, fresh bread. The prevalence of small specialty shops and, for those who work the night shift, fresh bread vending machines are testament to the German dedication to good food. 

Stuttgart: I've been in Baden-Wuttemberg and in the Neckar River Valley. It's exceedingly beautiful and actually, in my opinion, resembles many areas of the American Appalachia. Besides its scenic surroundings, I especially like how Stuttgart is an opera metropolis. I love opera!! (Especially Wagner) 

AMD 1

Ich habe Disney Lied gehört. Ich denke dass er war eine gutes Idee denn ich weiss die Wörter auf Englisch. Ich habe die Untertitel auf Deutsch gelesen und denn ich weiss das English, war er einfach.
 Combining my knowledge of the songs in English with my understanding of German, reading only the German subtitles, I could understand most of the songs.

First, I listened to 'Can You Feel the Love Tonight' ('Kann es wirklich Liebe sein?') from the Lion King. In general, the song conveyed many of the same themes as the song in English, but was a lot more poetic and sinister. For example. "Kann es wirklich Liebe sein" means (from what I understand) "Can it really be love?" which has a much different connotation than "Can you feel the love tonight?" Additionally, an idiom I thought was particularly funny was when Timon says, "Sie ist das A und O!" which they translate as "She's the most important thing."

Next, I listened to 'Colors of the Wind' ('Farbenspiel des Winds') from Pocahontas. Remembering from Kultur1 from Deutsch 101, that Germans love Native Americans, I thought the comment on the song, "Ein sehr schönes Lied ♥" was quite apt. Overall, the lyrics followed the English quite closely, probably because the song is animated to match the English song lyrics. The result was rather amusing because, in an attempt to translate closely, most of the lines don't rhyme at all. Also,  "Farbenspiel" means, literally, "color play," which is extremely accurate in the context of the way this song is animated.

Finally, I listened to 'I'll Make a Man Out of You' ('Sei ein Mann') from Mulan--a personal favorite. (Ich bin Chinesinn!) The German lyrics for this song did not match up nearly at all with the English ones. Besides 1 line, "Ihr müsst so stark sein wie ein Taifun," all of the German lyrics were significantly different than the English. I was a bit surprised when they said, "Ihr müsst so heiß sein wie Höllenfeuer", meaning (loosely) "He must be as hot as a hell-fire." I'm not sure whether Germans have the same connotations to the world "hell" as English-speakers do, but I was surprised to see that word in a children's movie.
