Kultur 8- Callie Chappell

Die Kultur texts diese Woche war sehr interessant. Normalweise, sind sie nicht so verbunden (related) zu die Vokabeln. Ich denke Draftophobia war richtig. Deutscher nie die Fensters geschlossen. I have been in a hot car with all of the windows up, in situations where opening a window would have been perfectly fine! Über Germany's Sauna Obsession, bin ich nicht überrascht. Nach Hause, habe ich ein grosses Sauna und sie sind sehr cool! (Oder heiss....) From my American perspective, I think the fact that they are unisex is a bit odd, but then again, this is Germany.. home of nude beaches and sex stores galore.... 

Finally, Mysterious Illness in Germany. I thought this article was the most interesting. Meine Familie glauben in "alternative medicine" so ich bin nicht so überrascht. Sometimes, I think people think too little of their immune systems. Even though Germans complain about having seemingly improbable illnesses, perhaps that compels them to take better care of themselves, it may allow their immune systems time to return (naturally) to homeostasis, before larger symptoms develop.

Hallo alle!

Diese Kultur-texte war sehr interessant. In Draftophobia: Blown Away by the Fear of Air Deutschen Leute glauben dass "es zieht" krank werden sein. Manchmal mag ich es zieht, manchmal nichts.  Aber wenn ich im Auto fahren, muss ich zieht haben. Mein Bruders Auto hat keine Luft! Dass ist sehr schrecklich! Keine Luft werde ich krank...

Die Artikel You Have What?  Mysterious Illness in Germany war sehr lustig. Meine Deutscherin Freudin ist immer krank! Aber diese "Krankheit" ist kaum Krankheit. Deutschen legen sich sollen hin. Gute Besserung!

Und endlich, mag ich die Sauna! Das klingt sehr nett! Meine Tante hat eine Sauna, aber nie sie verwenden (she never uses it). Wenn gehe ich zu Berlin, muss ich die Sauna probieren.

Im Sommer klingt Berlin gut. Ich freue mich auf die Deutschland reisen. Ich will zu Ritterfest gehen, aber denke ich im Herbst ist...Ich bin eine große Museum Zuschauerin, so das Guggenheim werde ich gehen.

Kultur 8, Gabrielle Spickard

     I usually enjoy reading the Kultur articles for each chapter in my German classes, I find them interesting and I also think that it's important to learn about the culture of the language that you're studying. For the first article about the "Draftophobia," I think that it's very strange. I don't really know about the legitimacy of German doctors' claims that drafts cause all sorts of illnesses, much like I don't know about the reasoning behind many German cultural practices. It just seems like they're making Summers unnecessarily uncomfortable for themselves. I did think that the image presented in the article of drivers in a car lowering the windows at a red light and closing them as soon as the car starts moving to be pretty funny, though.

     The next article about disease in Germany was also interesting. The possibility of contracting a uniquely German illness and Germans' attitudes towards illness continue to make me mildly uneasy about going to Germany (but not enough to make me not want to go). I feel like resistance towards doctors and medical care isn't really a German thing, though. I know many Americans here who share similar sentiments. My grandpa who is nearly deaf refuses to get a hearing aid because he insists that he can hear fine on his own, my other grandpa didn't want to go to the hospital even for a kidney stone, etc. The list continues. Maybe it's a stubborn-ness thing more than a German thing.

     Saunas seem nice in Germany. However, I'm not sure about the idea of a unisex sauna, but that may be my prudish American cultural expectations talking (compared to those of Germany). I've only been in a sauna once and I didn't see too much of the hype behind them, but maybe it's one of those things that takes repeated exposure and time to appreciate. 

     From the 365 Dinge... book, I found number 108, or the Kunsthalle Deutsche Bank, to be very interesting. First off, it's in Berlin, where I would very much like to go if I make it to Germany. Second, I find the idea of a well-curated contemporary art museum within a high-powered bank to be a very novel and curious idea. I'd like very much to see it! I like art, not so much banks, so that would be the main appeal to me, but still I'm curious.

     I like how the Kultur texts in the textbook had the central theme of the German education system. German universities seem great, for the most part! It seems like a university education in Germany is much more accessible due to the lower tuition fees, but there are probably other factors that affect accessibility that aren't addressed in the articles. The tiered system towards obtaining an undergraduate degree seemed interesting as well, I'm not sure if I'd prefer that to the system that most American universities use. It's also interesting that they don't focus that much on a liberal arts education. I guess that means that most students already have an idea for what they want to study by the time they get to university. However, one thing that I read that was kind of concerning was the fact that in the fifth or sixth grade most German students are evaluated and have educational tracks recommended for them. I think that it's a bit early for instructors and administrators to be playing a part in determining the overall path of their life at that point, but maybe that's just me.

When I started reading "You Have What?: Mysterious Illness in Germany" I laughed.  These Germans are so ridiculous.  But then, as I kept reading, I realized: I'm just like the Germans.  I refuse to get a flu shot every season.  Whenever I have a headache, nine out of ten times I'll take a pass on taking aspirin.  I'd much rather wander the Earth while sick than confront a doctor or go to a pharmacy.  And I'm not the only one in my family like this.  My father is the exact same way, as is my 90-something-year-old great grandmother.  Why?  Part of me thinks that aspirin and flu shots don't work.  Another part believes that if you overuse these things, your body builds a resistance which means you'll have to continue increasing your dosage until you eventually overdose.  But I guess it's also some good ol' German stubbornness too.

AMD 2 Jason Bui

Für mein AMD 2, ich habe das zweite Blog von Allison McDonald gelesen. Das Blog wurde von einer Austauschschülerin geschrieben, die Deutschland besucht hat. Das Blog ist über Erfahrungen in Deutschland. Sie hat in Freiburg, Deutschland gelebt, als sie den Blog zu geschrieben hat. Sie hat auf die Albert-Ludwigs Universität in Freiburg studiert. Die Blog-Beiträge waren über ihren tägliche Routine und ihre Erfahrungen. Zum Beispiel, Sie hat über Essen in Deutschland und berühmten Sehenswürdigkeiten in die Stadt gepostet. Auch hat Sie über Deutsch lernen gepostet.

Das Blog war sehr interessant. Ich habe es zu lesen genossen. It is nice to see someone else’s prospective on traveling to Germany. I am very interested in traveling to Germany or other German speaking countries for business in the future and it is nice to know how another person’s experience went. Overall, I really enjoyed reading all of the blog posts and I would highly recommend others to read about her experiences also.

Kultur 3, Emily Maggioncalda

Ich kann nicht in Deutschland wohnen. Ich liebe es zieht. Ich fahre immer mit meinem Fenster unten. Ich verstehe nicht diese Geheimniskrankheiten (mystery diseases). Ich mag nicht Medizin nehmen, aber ich werde, ob ich krank sein. Ich werde nicht in ein Saunahaus gehen, weil ich nackt sein mag nicht. Ich mag Wärme sein, aber ich werde nach Hause bleiben.

In Berlin will ich zum Nivea-Haus gehen. Ich liebe Massage und Maniküre erhalten. Auch, das Grillparty mitten auf dem Wasser klingt mir gut. Ich finde es sehr interessant. Ich will zum Sea Life gehen, weil ich Fisch sehen liebe.

Ich bin unsicher über die Deutsche Schulsystem. Ich mag die Idee, aber ich bin unsicher über Regierungschulen.

AMD2 Michael Nizinski

Für diese AMD sehe ich Deutsch Nachrichten. Ich habe kleine verstanden. Sie sprechen schnell.  Angela Merkel hat etwas an 2002. Was? Ich weiß nicht. So habe ich etwas neu gegangen. Ich habe Deutsch Sport Video gesehen. Ein Deutsch Fussball Team haben Ludovic Obraniak einen neuen Mittelfeldspieler verpflichtet. Sie sagen er wird zurück Erfolg mitbringen. Dann lese ich einem Artikel über Dirk Nowitzki. E spielt starken gegen Cleveland Cavaliers. Hat er dreiundzwanzig Punkte und acht Rebounds. Die Dallas Mavericks haben das Speil gewinnen.

AMD 2

Für mein AMD, ich habe mit meine Freundin gesprochen. Sie kommt aus Deutschland. Wir haben über viele Dinge gesprochen. Sie heißt Marie. Sie ist achtzehn Jahre alt. Ich habe "Wie geht's?" gefragt. Wir sprechen über ihre Prüfungen und ihre Klassen. Zuletzt, wir diskutierten Deutsche grammatik.

 Ich vermisse ihr!

AMD 2, Yuntao Chen

Für diesere Woche fortsetze ich den Dokumentarfilm "die Deutschen" zu sehen. Der titel von diesere Episode ist ,,Luther und die Nation". Es erzählt die Geschichte von Martin Luther und seine Reformation von Catholic Church.

In the 1500s, the Roman church was getting more and more corrupted. The Catholic clerks abused their power and the ordinary people's trust, and put more and more taxation on the German people. Martin Luther thought that people should not be able to use money to redeem their sin. And God should be directly connected to everyone, without the Roman churches in between --

,,Niemand stehe zwischen Gott und den Gläubigen."

This greatly annoyed both the Pope and his ally, the German king Karl der Fünfte. Martin Luther was persecuted and he had to seek protection from Friedrich der Weise, der sächsosche Landesherr. While hiding in Friedrich's castle Wartburg, Martin Luther finished one of his most important projects -- translating the bible into German. This was the first German translation of the bible, and it was extremely popular and widely spread after publication. The fact that ordinary people could reach and understand the biblical text made it very difficult for Roman churches to use bible as an excuse for their acts. It was said that this translation of bible formed the language foundation of the unified German nation.

Even though the protestant uprising was finally put down by Karl der Fünfte, Martin Luther had a long lasting influence on German history, his pursuit of religious and political freedom for the German people greatly accelerated the pace of forming an unified Germany.

AMD 2

Fur mein AMD, ich habe der Bild, ein deutsches papier gelesen. Es ist ein Tabloid papier, wie der New York Post. Der artikel an die startseite war uber der "Schnee-chaos" in der USA und in Europa. Der Artikel hat gesagt dass "So viel Weiß in so kurzer Zeit – laut Meteorologen kommt das nur alle 100 Jahre vor. Und weiterer Schneefall wurde bereits angekündigt". Der Artikel hat also das 200 Hauser in G.B. hat ubergeflotet gesagt. Aber der Bild ist nicht alles ein "News"Papier. Es hat sehr Unterhaltung. Ein Artikel uber Philip Seymour Hoffman, und seine letzten photos ist an der startseite,  und Justin Bieber hat ein photo mit ein strippet an der Seite. ein Ad fur Deutsch R & B singers sitzt zwischen ein artikel uber Deutsch "Survivor". Der Bild hat ein Sport seite. Der Bundesliga ist sehr popular in Deutschland, und der seite ist alles uber Football (soccer). eine kleine artikel uber der Super Bowl ist an der seite, weil Amerikanisch Football ist nicht so popular in Deutschland. Uber alles, diese papier ist sehr interessant.  

AMD 2

Für AMD 2, habe ich mit meiner Freundin gesprochen. Sie mag Deutsch und sie möchtet Deutschland besuchen. Ich habe sie für Abendessen eingeladen. She was sehr froh to meet with me. We had a long conversation  about everything German. Wir haben über Deutschen essen, Deutschten Autos, und Deutschen Architektur gesprochen. She was very interested in famous German celebrities that lived in the United States as well. I told her about NBA superstar Dirk Nowitzki, and how he won a national championship in 2011. The only other superstar that I know of is Martin Lawrence. She could not believe it, as most people don’t either. Arguably one of the funniest men on television, Martin Lawrence was born in Frankfurt, Germany in 1965.She was almost done after finding out that fact. The one last thing she wanted to know was how big is Germany. It was interesting to tell her that Germany is not that big of a country, and only about the size of the state of Montana. We had to depart ways shortly after. This was very fun to do because I was able to say what I knew about the country that I am so highly excited by.

AMD 2, Ian Propper

For my AMD 2 i played yet another video game in German. This time, however, I played Spelunky auf Deutsche. In Spelunky the player goes on "arbentur" durch cursed Minen. Each time you play the game, die Wände bewegen sich... Which means the walls move every time to randomize play throughs. This game, unfortunately, has no dialogue. That said, it is filled with German text. My favorite option was the "Fruenstil" option which I believe translates to Damsil. I chose ein Hund for my Frauenstil.

(The above is my Frauenstil thanking me for the swift rescue. Though, if she knew about the times I mistakenly dropped her in previous games, she might not be so welcoming) 

Spellunky was fun to play for my AMD because, as I had never played the game before, I needed to try to guess what items meant. For example I learned what a Bombentasche (bomb bag) was, and a Fallschirm (parachute).

AMD 2 - Alex Gamso

Meine Lieblingsding aus dem letzten Semester war Disney Lied in Deutsch. Für mein AMD habe ich Lieder aus Die Eiskönigin (Frozen) gehört. Ich liebe Die Eiskönigin und finde es schön in Deutsch.

Das erste Lied war "Ich Lass Los" (Let it Go).

 Es waren viele Worte ich schon kannte aus Desutsch 101. Zum Beispiel: Schnee, Nacht, weißen, dürfen, jetzt, Zeit, Sturm, Kalt, machen, und zurück. Die Lied hat viele Worte combinations in die Sätze. "Was ich wohl alles machen kann?" Es hat wohl als verb und hat ein modal verb. "Hier bin ich in dem hellen Licht!" Es hat der Dativ.  Aus Kapitel 7 war "hinter mir." Jetzt ich werde nicht vergessen diese Worte: frei, endlich, jetzt, Teil, Königin, versucht, lass los, bleibe, und Kraft.

Das zweite Lied war "Willst du Einen Schneemann Bauen" (Do You Want to Build a Snowman).

Ein kinder singt und es ist schwer zu verstehen. "Willst du..." ein gut Bespiel auf ein modal verb. "Schneemann" ist komisch weil es ist literally "snow" + "man" wie Englisch. "Los komm und spiel mit mir" ist sehr einfach. "Und Fahrrad fahren hier im Saal?" ist einfach auch. "Ich starre nur auf die Uhr" starre ist ein conjugate in Englisch. "Alle fragen wo du bist." ist gut fur Alle vs. Alles. Some alte Vokabular: beide, sollen, und fragen. "Ich bin doch für dich da" ist Akkusative.

Das letzte Lied war "Zum Ersten Mal" (For The Frist Time in Forever)

Es starts mit einem einfachen Satz über öffnen die Fenster und die Tür. Immer wieder singen sie: "Zum ersten Mal seit Ewigkeiten" welche ist die Englisch Title. Gut Vokabular: Manchen, Bild, liebe, und Traum. Es ist ein schnell Lied mit viele neues Worte. Es ist sehr gut.

Ich mag Disney Lieder in Deutsch hören. Ich weiß das Englisch sehr gut und kann die Thema infer. Es ist gut zulernen Deutsch oder jeder Sprachen.

AMD 2 - Jenna Malzahn

Für AMD 2, habe ich mit meiner Freundin in Deutsch gesprochen. Wir haben für eine Stunde und eine Halb gesprochen. The conversation definitely took awhile as I tried to string along sentences with the correct grammar and diction while simultaneously trying to decipher the phrases and sentences that she spoke, with all of her knowledge of six years of German classes. It was an interesting conversation to say the least seeing as at one point I decided to just tell her how I got ready in the morning. "Heute Morgen habe ich mich dusche. Dann habe ich mir die Haare wasche und ich habe mir die Haare föhne. Ich habe auch mich angezogen und habe ich mich geschmink." Then there was the instance where we ended up talking about two completely different things. I had been trying to tell her how "Heute hat es geschneit." but my pronunciation may have been a little off and before I could understand where the change in direction our conversation was taking she was asking me if "Hattest du ein schlectes Tag?". It was actually pretty funny once I realized and explained what I was saying and that my rant was merely just about the weather. Overall though the constant conversation in German made me feel a little more comfortable in speaking but I'm obviously still pretty far off. The ease with which my friend was able to speak the language made me excited to become that proficient. 

Amanda, AMD 2

Für AMD 2, Ich habe Rebecca’s blog gelesen. I will studiere im Freiburg, damit ich denke es war interessant. Sie hatte Angst, aber hatte spaβ. Sie hat Heimweh auch, und war krank manchmal. Sie hat eine Freundin im Freiburg, wer war nett und nicht Amerikanisch. Rebecca hat über Oktoberfest, Munich, und Berlin geschrieben. Der blog ist alt, aber sie sagt die Uni war frei! Ich wünschte die Uni hier war L. Ich weiβ es ist nicht frei in Deutschland jetzt. Sie hat viele Stadt besuchen und Referat gehalten. Die Klassen scheine schwer denn sie sind auf Deutsch. Rebecca’s reise war eine Jahre, oder zwei Semester. Ich hoffe nӓchst Jahre Freiburg besuchen!

AMD 2 Gabrielle Spickard

     For my AMD 2, I decided to watch South Park in German. They had most, if not all, of the episodes translated and dubbed in German on the website, so I watched the most recent episode "The Hobbit" (oder in Deutsch , "The Hobbit"). I was able to navigate the website fairly easily and was able to understand a good amount of the German on the website, and if I couldn't understand it I was able to infer a rough translation through context clues (for example, the button to press to watch the episode read "Jetzt 'The Hobbit' ansehen", translating to "Now watch 'The Hobbit'". While I was watching the actual episode, I was surprised at how much I was actually able to understand. I certainly wasn't able to understand everything (barely the majority of) what they said, but if I couldn't understand completely what the characters were seeing I was able to pick out certain words enough so that I could understand the situation. It was a wonderful, very educational experience.

AMD 2

For this AMD, lese ich Harry Potter und der Stein der Weisen continued. Es war sehr schwierig zu lesen diesen Seiten. Ich bemühe mir mit die Vokabeln. Ich weiß etwas ganze Satz. Zum Beispiel: “du hast in letzter Zeit nichts von deiner Schwester gehört, oder?”= Have you heard from your sister recently? “Die Dursleys gingen zu Bett.”= The Dursley went to bed. “Er war groß, dünn und sehr alt, jedenfalls der silbernen Farbe seines Haares und Bartes nach zu schließen”= He was big, thin, and very old, in any case the silver color of his hair und beard never ended. “Der Name dieses Mannes war Albus Dumbledore.”= The name of the man was Albus Dumbledore. Viele neue Wörter sind Gürtel= belt, gedankenverloren= absorbed in thought, und irgendetwas= anything. Ich weiss etwas Wörter zum Beispiel "Mein lieber Professor"= My favorite Professor, "durch die Nase"= through the nose, und "einfach"= easy.

AMD 2

Guten Abend!

Fur meine blog dies Woche, ich lese Allison Mcdonald's blog. Ihr blog ist about viele experiences im Deutschland.

Die ersten blog ist about ein wochende im Berlin. Sie hat viele museums gegangen. Es war sehr interessant. In die museums, viele tributes to Holocaust victims konnen be gesehen. Sie beschriebt die Angst dass Jews had back then. Sie also mentions wie kreativ der Architect war wer machen die Building. Berlin ist ein interessant Stadt und ich will zu besuchen bald.

Another artikle war about ihr klasses. Sie nehme vier klasses und sie gefallt alles, aber sie gefallt Geschiste beste. Sie ist ein engineer, damit sie lesen nicht viele. sie also gefallt sprechen mit ander Deustche Leute. Es ist ein gut way for ihr zu practice Deutsche sprechen. In ihr Deutschen Computer lab, Sie haben ein Katze, welche Sie gefallt.

Ich will besuche Deutschland sehr bald. Es seems dass there ist viele interessant Dingen machen. Ich soll besuchen Berlin bevor any ander Stadt. Ich mag wie grob der Stadt es. Also, ich will reiten am der Deutschen Zug. Ich habe nie reiten am eine Zug.

AMD 2

Für ADM 2, Ich habe zu einem Deutschen Restaurant in Ann Arbor gegangen.  Einige meiner Freunde und ich dachte, es würde Spaß machen, Deutsch im Restaurant den Kellner sprechen. Allerdings haben die Kellner nicht Deutsch sprechen. Was für eine Schande. Also anstatt, sprachen wir in Deutschen zueinander. Natürlich, es war einfach, aber es hat Spaß gemacht. Das Essen war gut. Ich mag Weiner Schnitzle mit Kartoffeln. Wenn es eine Lebensmittel Amerikaner machen könnte, ich wünschte, es war Weiner Schnitzle. Die Deutschen wissen, wie es zu tun!

AMD 2: Kängurus!

Ich habe ein Kindervideo gesehen. Es heißt "Paula und die wilden Tiere: Hüpfen wie ein Känguru". Ich habe über ein Känguru in "Die Känguru-Chroniken" gelesen, so wahrscheinlich will ich ein Känguru sehen :) Paula sagt Deutschland ist 5000km weg von Australia, und dass sie zu Australia geflogen hat. Sie sagt drei Arten von Känguru in Australia wohnen, und sie beschriebt was sie essen. Auch, sie beschriebt wie das Babykänguru ist geboren. Paula hat ein Känguru heißt "Banjo" kennengelernt. Es war sehr, sehr entzückend. Ich will ein Babykänguru, aber ich werde ihm "G'day Mate" nennen. Paula benutzt eine Kugelschreiberfeder wie das Kängurubeine hopfen schauen (really unsure about my grammar in this sentence). Sie hat ein Babykänguru gewogen, und es hat 506gram gewogen. Es war sehr klein! Ich liebe Kängurus :)

AMD 2

Für AMD 2, habe ich der Blog von die Michigan Studentin gelesen. Sie hat über ihre Zeit in Freiburg geschrieben. Ihre Persönlichkeit ist sehr lustig und intelligent. Ihr Blog hat so viel Information über in Deutschland leben. Freiburg scheint sehr schön und gemütlich. Sie hat über Deutsche Schokolade essen geschrieben. Sie hat she misses Deutsche Schokolade täglich essen gesagt. Studieren in Deutschland klingt sehr lustig.

AMD 2

Hallo alle!

Heute habe ich "Die Deutschen: Otto und das Reich" gesehen. Es war sehr informativ. Ich denke, dass Deutschen geschichte sehr wichtig ist. I got this idea by reading another blog so I thought this would be perfect! Ich mag Geschichte!

In das Film, Otto wird könige. Sein Vater ist gestorben. Otto wird koonige von Frankreich. Im 
Jahre 843 CE Westfranken, Mittelreich, und Ostfranken ist alle Frankreich. Ostfrenken ist Sachsen, Franken, Schwaben, und Baiern.

Otto began to build an army in order to strengthen the different German groups into a nation. Dann sein erstegeboren Sohn war sehr böse. Er rebelled! Aber Otto forgave ihn. Im Jahre 955 der Magyaren attacked. Otto und sein Army hat gewonnen.

Und er bekommt Emporer of the Holy Roman Emire. Dann er Sohn (Otto II) mit Theophanu geheiratet, to strengthen the kingdom (Theophanu was die Tochter of the Byzantine Emperor).

AMD 2

Aus diesem AMD ich eine weitere Episode von South Park gesehen.  In dieser Episode, jeder in South Park kauft Hybrid-und weil es sie selbstgefällig geworden.  Eine Menge von Stereotypen wurden in dieser Episode angesprochen, und ich frage mich, was die Deutschen denken, der Amerikaner, wenn sie beobachten South Park.  Glauben sie, dass Menschen, die Hybrid-Autos fahren selbstgefällig sind?  Glauben sie, dass jeder, der in San Francisco lebt, ihre eigenen Fürze riechen?  Was halten sie von George Clooney denken?  Dies sind wichtige Fragen, die beantwortet werden müssen!
